Outside
Relax on the terrace with an aperitif as the sun sets at the end of another beautiful day. The beautiful private swimming pool (9x5 meters) is surrounded by a rose garden and has a view of the church of Carsac-de-Gurson in the background. It is heated and open from May to September. Relax with a book on the sun loungers, take a cooling dip or splash around with pool toys and inflatables. Next to the swimming pool, the loggia offers shade all day long.
The castle terrace offers a patio table for 10 people, with a parasol that provides shade on the hottest days. In front of the castle are three lawns lined with herbs and flowering shrubs. Choose lounge chairs if someone has already taken a spot in the hammock, or participate in a game of jeu de boules, badminton or swing ball. The orchard is the icing on the cake. From spring to autumn there are fruits and nuts: plums, cherries, peaches, apricots, almonds, apples, pears, blackberries and figs. We invite you to pick what is ripe during your stay. The castle is surrounded by six hectares of land, including the orchard, two lakes and several flower meadows. You can have a picnic or look out for deer, coypu, waterfowl and countless butterflies. There is room for large family games and quiet places to sit and watch the sunset.
Just a kilometer away, overlooked by the ruins of Château de Gurson, is the beautiful Lac de Gurson, with a beautiful beach and swimming area with lifeguards. In the summer there is paddle boarding and kayaking. A café serves ice cream, fast food and cold drinks. The path that runs around the lake is a nice run or walk from the castle.
Markets
The medieval bastide towns of the Dordogne are known for their weekly markets. Markets are the best place to buy great local produce and enjoy the hustle and bustle of French country life. Fill your basket with goodies and then grab a cup of coffee or perhaps a lunch of Arcachon oysters and a glass of local white wine. Our favorite markets in particular are St Foy le Grande, Bergerac and Libourne.
Saint Emilion
You are thirty minutes from St Emilion, a remarkable medieval town built around wine and pilgrimage sites. Visit the historic underground church to hear the story of the hermit of the same name. Then wander through the steeply winding streets to soak up the atmosphere. Of course there is world class wine here. There are wine shops to suit every budget, with knowledgeable staff to help you make the perfect choice.
Wine
From local vins de soif to the grands crus of St Emilion and Pomerol, our region is a wine lover's paradise. Many chateaux sell directly to visitors, host tastings and offer tours where you can see the wine being made and sometimes meet the makers. Around St Emilion, some castles have restaurants where you can have lunch or dinner, surrounded by vineyards. Towards Bergerac, the vineyards of Montbazillac make a local dessert wine worth trying. In Bordeaux you can discover the history of wine at the spectacular Cité du Vin museum.
Walking and cycling
Hiking trails cross the fields and vineyards around Carsac-de-Gurson. One passes just behind the castle and leads you through vineyards and small woodlands to St Martin de Gurson for your morning bread and croissants. We provide maps of local routes.
Cycling enthusiasts
Avid cyclists will enjoy exploring the rolling hills and quiet country lanes surrounding the village. You can rent bicycles on site and have them delivered to the castle. The Lawrence d'Arabie long-distance cycle route runs just outside the castle.
