Located inside the fortified walls of the medieval village of Domme (voted “one of the most beautiful villages of France’’), this fully restored stone cottage offers charming and comfortable accommodation for a couple or small family. La Combe has a master bedroom, a small bedroom, a bathroom, a large open-plan kitchen and dining room, and a bright and cozy living room. It also has a small secluded garden with table and chairs to lunch outside al fresco under the fruit trees while enjoying the extensive view over the fortified village walls. The house is set in a quiet street but is only 3 minutes walk from the shops, bars and restaurants of the bastide village. You can lie in bed enjoying the views over the countryside and send your partner to get the baguettes and croissants in the mornings! Or wander back home in the evening, after a delicious meal and a romantic stroll through the honey-coloured village.
La Combe was featured in the Travel section of the UK Sunday Times as one of the 12 most romantic places to stay in Europe.
Description
From the doorstep made with traditional “pisé” (small pieces of stone set into lime) the front door opens into an open plan kitchen and dining area. The solid wood kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven, hob, microwave, toaster, kettle and fridge-freezer. There is also large cast iron woodstove for those chillier evenings in low and middle season. Adjacent is the living room with a sofa, two armchairs, (TV for dvd, no channels) a coffee table and a large collection of French and English books. It has French doors which open onto the yard and the stone staircase that leads to the secluded garden.
From the dining area, an oak spiral staircase leads upstairs to the bedrooms and the bathroom. The comfortably elegant master bedroom at the rear of the house, with its view over the valley from the dormer window, has a double bed and plenty of under-eave storage. The light and airy bathroom features a view of the fortified walls and has a full bath, shower, sink and toilet. The small bedroom to the front of the house, with its exposed wooden beams, has a double bed and comfortably sleeps one or two. The house has been restored using traditional and ecological materials including lime plaster, hemp insulation, natural paints and wood treatments and organic fabrics. It also runs on renewable electricity. It has been redecorated with a keen eye to detail whilst retaining many of the original features including exposed stone walls and wooden beams. There are also solid wooden floors throughout.
Outside
There is an enclosed sunny yard ideal for parking your bicycle. Up the stone staircase a small secluded garden features two fig trees, an apricot tree and an herb garden. A garden dining table and four chairs as well as deck chairs are provided. The garden offers shady and sunny areas to sit, relax and enjoy the view. The garden is on several levels and the old stone staircase accessing it is steep, which may make it unsuitable for families with young children. Parking: You have the option to temporarily load and unload your belongings in front of your house. There is a parking card for free parking. Afterwards, parking on the street or in the car park is free with the parking card. There are several parking spaces available within 100m of the house.
Domme is an attraction in itself. Built in the 13th century, it stands above a bend in the river Dordogne. Its history is fascinating and its old buildings and streets have been perfectly preserved. It has restaurants of all grades, a weekly market and its own caves accessible from the market square.
Within easy reach are the medieval town of Sarlat (much used in film sets), the amazing cave systems of Perigord, the spectacular chateaux of Castelnaud, Beynac and Montfort and the troglodyte villages of LaRoque Gageac and St Christophe.
